Epithalon (also spelled epitalon) and Pinealon are short peptides from the “bioregulator” tradition developed by Vladimir Khavinson’s group in St Petersburg. The claims attached to them are among the boldest in the peptide world, telomerase activation, telomere lengthening, slowed ageing, brain repair. The underlying evidence is a mix of genuine cell-culture findings and much weaker human data, and the gap between the two is where most misunderstanding lives. This article lays out what each peptide is, what the studies actually report, and how to read the popular “epithalon protocol 10 days” search against the evidence.
Neither peptide is a licensed medicine in the UK, and human safety data are essentially absent.
What Epithalon is
Epithalon is a synthetic tetrapeptide, Ala-Glu-Asp-Gly. It was designed as a defined, reproducible analogue of epithalamin, a peptide extract of the pineal gland used in earlier Soviet and Russian geroprotection research. The bioregulator hypothesis holds that very short peptides can interact with DNA and influence the transcription of specific genes [1]. Whether that mechanism is correct remains unsettled; a 2025 review noted that despite extensive biological study, the physicochemical and structural understanding of the peptide is still limited [2].
The telomerase and telomere claims
The most striking Epithalon findings are in cell culture. In telomerase-negative human fetal fibroblasts, adding Epithalon induced expression of the telomerase catalytic subunit, restored enzymatic activity and produced telomere elongation, interpreted as reactivation of the telomerase gene in somatic cells [3]. A 2025 study again reported telomere lengthening in human cell lines, attributing it to telomerase upregulation or the alternative lengthening of telomeres pathway; note this paper later carried a published correction [4]. In mice, long-term Epitalon given at roughly 30–40 µg/kg on five consecutive days each month was associated with altered ageing biomarkers and reduced spontaneous tumour incidence [5].
These are real results, but they are laboratory and animal results. Telomerase activation in a dish is not proven anti-ageing benefit in a person, and, because telomerase reactivation is also a feature of many cancers, it is not self-evidently desirable. The cell data establish a mechanism worth studying, not a clinical outcome.
The human “longevity” data and why they are weak
The human evidence most often cited for Epithalon is not, strictly, Epithalon. It comes from studies of epithalamin, the pineal extract, in elderly patients. Follow-up studies from Khavinson’s group reported lower mortality over 12 and 15 years in elderly patients given the pineal preparation alongside standard therapy, compared with a control group on the same basic therapy [6][7]. That sounds dramatic, but the studies were unblinded, come from a single research lineage that developed the compound, are decades old and have not been independently replicated. A 2025 review of Epitalon concluded there are no randomised controlled trials and essentially no human safety or toxicity data [2]. Other work reported that Epitalon can modulate the pineal melatonin rhythm in elderly people [8], and an early report described effects in retinitis pigmentosa [9], again small and from the originating group.
The “epithalon protocol 10 days” question
A very common search is epithalon protocol 10 days, reflecting the way courses are described in the bioregulator literature and repeated by vendors. Reported figures should be read as literature accounts, not instructions. In the Russian tradition, epithalamin and epitalon were typically given as short intermittent courses, often around ten daily injections, sometimes repeated periodically through the year, rather than continuous dosing; the mouse geroprotection study used five consecutive days per month [5].
The honest evidence note is this: these ten-day courses come from small, unblinded studies and long-standing practice within one research lineage; no independent, blinded trial has established an optimal dose or duration. No regulator has evaluated an Epithalon protocol, so citing a precise “10-day protocol” as established fact overstates the literature.
What Pinealon is
Pinealon is a tripeptide, Glu-Asp-Arg, from the same bioregulator programme and marketed for “brain repair” and neuroprotection. The data are entirely preclinical. Pinealon reduced reactive-oxygen-species accumulation and improved viability in cerebellar granule cells and PC12 cells under oxidative stress [10]; it protected rat offspring in a model of prenatal hyperhomocysteinemia [11]; and it showed antihypoxic activity among a set of short peptides [12]. There are no human trials of Pinealon; its claims rest on cell and rodent work only.
Reconstitution maths for a 10 mg Epithalon vial
Bioregulator peptides are supplied as lyophilised powder. The arithmetic is the same as for any peptide: concentration equals mass divided by diluent volume.

So a 10 mg vial with 2 mL of diluent gives 5,000 mcg/mL; 20 units on a U-100 syringe (0.2 mL) contain 1,000 mcg. Adding more diluent does not change the total mass in the vial, only how many units correspond to a given quantity.
Diluent choice and storage
A multi-dose vial that will be punctured repeatedly over a course needs a preserved diluent. How do you reconstitute a 10 mg Epithalon vial?
Add a measured volume of diluent and divide the mass by it. A 10 mg vial with 2 mL gives 5 mg/mL (5,000 mcg/mL), so each unit on a U-100 syringe holds 50 mcg. The total mass in the vial is fixed; the diluent volume only sets how many units equal a given dose.
